IRIS MORALES is a lifelong activist and organizer for social justice, racial equality, women’s rights, and the decolonization of Puerto Rico. She collaborates closely with activists, artists, and writers to build on this experience and bring new projects to fruition. Her love of community, history, and storytelling led her to media as a tool for social change. Morales is the founding director and executive editor of Red Sugarcane Press dedicated to publishing works about the Puerto Rican and Latinx Diasporas in the Americas. Currently, she serves on the advisory board of the Instituto de Formación Política of Mijente, a political home for Latinx people who seek racial, economic, gender, and climate justice.
Morales is the author of Revisiting Herstories: The Young Lords Party, examining the rise of feminism in the organization from 1969 to 1972 and the factors that advanced or derailed it. She is also the author of Through the Eyes of Rebel Women, The Young Lords: 1969-1976, the first and only account of women members. As an anthologist, her compilations include Voices from Puerto Rico: Post-Hurricane Maria/ Voces desde Puerto Rico: pos-huracan Maria (2019) about climate justice and colonialism, and Latinas: Struggles & Protests in 21st Century USA (2018), a collection of contemporary feminist perspectives. She is the producer, writer, and co-director of the award-winning documentary, !Palante Siempre Palante! The Young Lords, which was broadcast on national public television in 1996 and continues to introduce new audiences to Puerto Rican history and the social movements of the late 1960s.
Ms. Morales is an independent scholar and a frequent presenter at colleges and community venues.
